The original name of the school was Anglican Girls’ Secondary School, Onitsha. The Anglican Mission, Diocese on the Niger, founded it on 3rd April 1963. The Motto of the School is Purity and Integrity. The founder’s aim were three fold: -To ensure the upbringing of God-fearing young girls. -To foster the ideals of Anglican Communion in Onitsha. -To establish a complementary institution (Girls) to the already existing Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha. In 1970, the school was taken over by the state government and renamed as Girls’ Secondary School, Onitsha. Though the school bears Girls’ Secondary School, Onitsha, it is more like an island surrounded by Nkpor Community and other non-indigenous settlements. On the North is Onitsha-Awka Old Road; on the South is Nkpor Market along Onitsha-Enugu expressway. On the West is St. Michael’s and All Angels Anglican Church, Nkpor, on the East is Enekwasumpu Obosi. This situation poses a problem, because it leaves the school without a defined community.
